GREELEY, Colo.—Crews recovered the body Saturday of a Greeley teen who died after he and a friend drove a car over a homemade dirt ramp into a water-filled gravel pit.
The victim’s name was not released.
He and his friend, Darren Bucklen, 19, of Greeley, were riding in a car Friday night that had the roof cut off. They drove over a ramp they built at the edge of the water and flew 40 feet from the shore, said Dale Lyman, spokesman for the Union Colony First Rescue Authority.
Lyman said they were traveling about 35 mph when they reached the ramp, he said.
The car quickly sank in about 25 feet of water, and the victim had trouble swimming to safety, Lyman said.
Margie Martinez, spokeswoman for the Weld County Sheriff’s Department, said an investigation was under way.
