Boulder’s Dinner Theatre won seven of the Colorado Theatre Guild’s 20 Henry Awards at a gala celebration held Monday at the Aurora Fox, including “best season by a company.”
BDT won its other six awards for “Ragtime,” an unprecedented collaboration with Shadow Theatre Company on a massive stage adaptation of the E.L. Doctorow epic novel looking at three vastly different groups of Americans at the turn of the 20th century.
In addition to best musical, “Ragtime” awards included for best actor and actress (Shelly Cox-Robie and Wayne Kennedy), supporting actor (Brandon Dill) and director (Michael J. Duran).
BDT had been nominated for a leading 20 awards, including 13 for “Ragtime.”
Monday was also a big night for the Paragon and The Avenue theaters. Both companies won four Henrys each.
Paragon won the best play award for “Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune.” Real-life couple Thomas Borrillo and Emily Paton Davies netted best actor and actress awards for the same play. Christopher Wink won for scenic design (“Hedda Gabler”).
The Avenue’s “Dog Sees God, Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead” won for best ensemble, best supporting actress (Elgin Kelley), best director of a play (Nick Sugar) and sound design (Dave Johnson).
Curious won two awards while Country Dinner Playhouse, Buntport and Score Marketing won one each. It was a particularly tough night for Curious, which had been nominated for 15 awards, and for the Arvada Center. The state’s second-largest theater had only five nominations and was shut out from any wins.
The Henry Awards are named after retired producer Henry Lowenstein. CTG member companies located within the seven-county metro area were eligible.
The Denver Center Theatre Company chose not to participate in this year’s awards in protest of a residency rule that required individual nominees to have lived in Colorado for at least half of the year.
The winners were determined by a vote of 11 judges, including Denver Post theater critic John Moore. Each of the judges had to have seen at least 50 eligible productions from June 1, 2006-May 31, 2007.
