A girl hit by a car Monday night while riding her bicycle in Aurora has died.

Erica Williams, 10, was riding on East Mississippi Avenue and South Salida Street when she was hit by a green 1991 Ford Escape, Aurora police Lt. Troy Edwards said.

The accident happened around 6 p.m. She died nearly six hours later from her injuries.

The driver of the Escape was identified as James Brooks, 61, Edwards said. He was not hurt.

Edwards said it did not appear that Brooks was speeding.

William Flerry, who lives within sight of the intersection, saw the accident.

“I saw when the car hit her and I heard her scream, and I went to help her,” he said.

He stayed with her until paramedics came.

“I thought she was going to be OK,” he said. Flerry was devastated to learn she had not survived.

The intersection is a dangerous one, he said, because drivers on Mississippi don’t think to brake as they travel through the residential neighborhood.

He said that Erica and her little sister were riding their bikes across Mississippi when the older girl was hit.

Flerry said Erica’s little sister rode home to get her parents. When he arrived at the scene, Flerry said her father was,”heartbroken and distraught. The look on his face said it all.”

Flerry did not know Erica but said his son attends Arkansas Elementary School with her.
