University of Denver sophomore Katie Kempter of Albuquerque shot a 4-over-par 76 to claim medalist honors in sectional qualifying for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Colorado Golf Club in Parker. Also qualifying for the championship, at Crooked Stick G.C. in Carmel, Ind., Aug. 6-12, were Lynette Duran of Foothills G.C., Ashley Tait of Raccoon Creek G.C. and Michelle Regan of Kansas State and Prairie Village, Kan.

Top seeds advance at Match Play

The top three seeds advanced from the round of 64 at the Colorado Golf Association’s Match Play Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club, with No. 1 seed and defending champion Aaron Weston of Meridian G.C. downing Ken Sady of Eagle Ranch G.C. 5 and 4.

Weston is trying to become the first player to defend his title since Brett Dean did it in 1991. No. 2 seed Michael Baird of South Suburban and the University of Colorado defeated Adam Joiner of Aspen Glen G.C. 1-up. No. 3 seed and 2004 CGA Stroke Play champion Drew Stoltz of Fort Collins Country Club cruised past Sean Forey of Rolling Hills C.C. 6 and 5.

Also advancing to today’s round of 32 were CGA Junior Stroke Play champion Mark Hubbard of Pinehurst C.C., 2006 finalist Zen Brown of Indian Tree G.C. and Colorado State, 2004 champion Steve Irwin of Lakewood C.C., CGA Senior Match Play champion David Delich of Broadmoor G.C., and Patrick Grady of Omni Interlocken and CU, the 2005 champion and current CGA Public Links champion.

Junior Stroke Play goes to playoff

Emily Wood of Salida G.C. and Elizabeth Kresock of Pinehurst C.C. will play a sudden-death playoff today to decide the champion of the Colorado Women’s Golf Association Junior Stroke Play Championship after they tied at 11-over-par 155 at the end of play Tuesday at Green Valley Ranch G.C.
