THE ANNOUNCEMENT: The National Science Foundation on Tuesday picked the closed Homestake Gold Mine for a national underground physics lab.
WHERE IS IT: The nearly 8,000-foot-deep mine, at Lead, S.D., produced 10 percent of all the gold ever found in the United States before closing in 2000.
WHAT WOULD THE LAB DO: Physicists want to go deep underground to conduct experiments to increase their understanding of the universe’s composition, its beginning and its future. More than a mile of rock would filter out many of the cosmic rays that interfere with such work.
