Passenger traffic at Denver International Airport hit another record in May, with nearly 4.3 million passengers using the airport in the month.

It was a 2.9 percent increase from May 2006.

Passenger traffic for the year through May totaled 19.9 million, up 4.4 percent compared with last year.

DIA manager Turner West in a written statement that the airport expects “an extremely busy summer.”

“The summer travel period at the airport usually starts around the Memorial Day holiday, but it seems to have started a couple of weeks earlier than normal this year,” he said in the statement.

In a separate report, national data for April from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics showed DIA was the fifth busiest airport in the nation in April based on the number of passengers boarding planes. For the year through April, DIA was the fourth busiest airport. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International was the busiest airport in the nation in both periods.
