Alligator Grill a good place to start an evening of dining

If by some wonderful (but unlikely) chance the weather is comfortable enough to sit outside, the patio at the Alligator Grill is the place to enjoy one of Austin’s most wonderful appetizers. A favorite with locals, this spacious spot is known for its honest subscription to bayou foods. Cajun kisses – jalapeños stuffed with jack cheese and shrimp and wrapped in bacon – are especially popular. Whether you go for the crawfish étouffée, jambalaya or the catfish Thibodeaux (a variation on the Cajun kisses theme, only with a white wine cream sauce), you’ll know your taste buds are in good hands. Happy hour from 4-7 p.m. features $1 off appetizers and 50 cents off drinks. If you can manage to save room for dessert, there are fried Twinkies too. Alligator Grill, 3003 S. Lamar Blvd., 512-444-6117,
