DENVER—The Colorado Rockies put left-handed reliever Brian Fuentes on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 4 for a mild back strain.

Fuentes, the Rockies’ closer for most of the season, had 20 saves in 26 opportunities but blew four straight saves during a road trip and was demoted.

He last pitched on July 3 against the Mets, retiring all three batters he faced, two by strikeouts.

Fuentes was selected to the National League All-Star roster for the third consecutive year but did not play because of the strain.

His ERA is 4.06 in 40 appearances. He could be activated from the DL Thursday.

To take Fuentes’ roster spot, Colorado called up infielder Omar Quintanilla from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Quintanilla was expected to be in uniform for Friday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.
