CHEYENNE, Wyo.—The Wyoming football program has landed its sixth verbal commitment for its 2008 recruiting class.

Corey Orth, a 6-foot-5, 235-pound defensive end from Buena Vista High in Buena Vista, Colo., said he will sign with UW in February.

Orth will be a senior at Buena Vista, a Class 3A school, this fall.

Orth attended a football camp at UW last month and said during a phone interview Monday with the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle that he committed to UW about three days after the camp.

“I really liked the atmosphere and the feel of a small town, which is where I’m from,” he said. “… Plus, they have what I want to major in there, which is sports medicine.”

As a junior, Orth was an all-conference and honorable mention all-state selection, and was named his conference’s defensive most valuable player. He recorded around 100 tackles, 12 quarterback sacks and recovered three fumbles.

He also plays on the offensive line as a tackle.

UW was the first school to offer Orth a scholarship. Other schools that recruited him were Colorado, Colorado State and Kansas State.

“I think I bring good leadership skills, and I pride myself in not taking a play off,” he said. “But I also know that I need to get bigger and faster.”

Orth is the second prep defensive end from Colorado to commit to UW. The other is Dylan Kildahl (6-4, 230) from Highland High in Ault, Colo.

Verbal commitments are nonbinding, and NCAA rules prohibit college coaches from talking to the media about recruits until they have signed their national letters of intent.

UW would like to sign at least three defensive ends in this recruiting class.

The other verbal commitments for the Cowboys include: offensive lineman Jim Downs (6-6, 260) of Glenrock; offensive lineman Kyle Magnuson (6-7, 306) from Elkhart, Ind.; receiver Justin Morgan (6-2, 187) from Chicago; offensive lineman Nick Williams (6-5, 260) from Highlands Ranch, Colo.
