Daly implodes on back nine
John Daly holed out from the 11th fairway for eagle. Three holes later, he was botching chips on his way to a triple bogey. His opening round of the British Open was loaded with ups and downs, just like his career. The linescore: three birdies and an eagle through the first 11 holes; three bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey on the last seven. He went from the lead to a tie for 78th. He finished with a 74 and walked away from reporters without speaking.

Teen spanks elders
Rory McIlroy, right, looks like he got into the British Open with one of those tickets that allows juniors through the gates for free if they’re with an adult. However, the baby-faced 18-year-old from Northern Ireland beat up on most of the grown-ups Thursday while shooting the only bogey-free opening round. Of his 3-under-par 68, McIlroy pondered the improbable: For one night, at least, he’d go to bed with a one-stroke edge on Tiger Woods. “I think he’ll be able to sleep all right,” McIlroy said jokingly.

Before the tournament got underway, players said the final three holes might be the most difficult to play. In the opening round, Tiger Woods was one of just three players to birdie the 16th and he did it with a 90-foot putt. First-round leader Sergio Garcia made his only bogey of the round on the hole.
