A 3-month-old Delta baby, whose head was punctured by a gun-fired nail that ricocheted off boards, is doing well at a Grand Junction hospital, officials say.
“The boy is doing wonderfully,” said Bill Sowell, Delta police spokesman.
The infant will likely stay at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction for another week for observation before being released, Sowell said.
That will give the baby’s surgical scars time to heal and allow doctors to observe his behavior to confirm that he didn’t suffer any permanent damage, he said.
Authorities still have not released the baby’s name. The family has asked authorities not to release their names to protect their privacy, Sowell said.
The boy was sitting on his mother’s lap at 8:27 p.m. near a Delta shop that is under construction when a nail ricocheted off of boards and hit the boy in the head.
“We’re still looking into this to make sure it is what it appears to be and that is a fluke accident,” Sowell said.
Police will discuss their findings with prosecutors from the district attorney’s office to decide whether any action should be taken, he said.
