The fifth annual Urban Assault Race arrives in Denver on Sunday, ferrying a festive and frivolous competition that could include anything from big people pedaling Big Wheels to navigating a Slip ‘n Slide. The nine-city tour, billed as a “one-of-a-kind urban bike extravaganza,” asks racers to solve riddles, surmount silly obstacles and track down landmark checkpoints on their way to the finish line. Family-friendly and decidedly not oriented toward the grimacing, shaved-leg race crowd, this is the race in which a local’s savvy and mental fitness and an 8-year-old’s brain are often enough to beat the jersey-wearing racers.
