A new DUI task force of seven law enforcement agencies will be patrolling Denver streets Thursday, officials announced at a press conference at the State Capitol today.

The Metropolitan DUI Task Force is a collaborative effort by Arapahoe County, the Colorado State Patrol, Denver, Douglas County, Jefferson County, Northglenn and Wheat Ridge to cut down on the number of people driving under the influence of alcohol.

Capt. Eric Rubin of Denver Police Department said that along with making arrests, the intent of the task force is to send a strong message.

“If you’re driving through any one of these jurisdictions and you see multiple jurisdictions involved, that’s an eye-opener,” he said.

The multiagency agreement allows police officers, deputy sheriffs and state troopers to patrol communities as a cohesive unit.

If each agency contributes two patrol cars, that could mean a 12-car increase for communities involved, said Sonny Jackson, a Denver Police Department spokesman.

The increase in resources allows more officers to patrol small areas in a saturation effort.
