Heavy competition between United, Frontier and Southwest Airlines at Denver International Airport continues to drive air fares down for travelers.
According to federal data released today, the average air fare in Denver declined 5.4 percent in the first quarter of the year compared with a year earlier, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The average fare in Denver in the first quarter was $365.58, down from $386.40 a year earlier and $495.08 in the first quarter of 2001.
The Colorado Springs average air fare fell 1.6 percent in the first quarter, to $404.35, down from $410.80 a year earlier.
Average air fares nationwide fell 0.6 percent in the first quarter compared with a year ago and are well below the high in 2001, according to the federal report.
The average fares are based on domestic itineraries on round trips on one-way with no return flight, and they include frequent flyer fares.
