Greeley — Lawyers began culling over a list of 250 potential jurors this morning to pick a jury in the trial of a UNC backup punter charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Mitch Cozad is accused of stabbing the football team’s starting punter, Rafael Mendoza, on Sept. 11, 2006, in hopes of taking over as punter. Mendoza received a five-inch gash in his kicking leg but was able to recover within two weeks and finish the season.

Cozad claims he is innocent and charges police with bullying him during his interrogations.

The trial, estimated to last two weeks, started this morning in Weld County District Court. Lawyers on both sides said they expect to pick a 12-member jury, plus two alternates, by Tuesday afternoon.
