DENVER—Doctors expected an Arizona patient with a multiple drug-resistant form of tuberculosis to remain at a university hospital for a week after undergoing surgery Tuesday.

Robert Daniels was having his left lung removed at the University of Colorado Hospital in a procedure that complements antibiotic therapy and improves his chances of recovery, said officials at National Jewish Medical and Research Center, where he had been treated.

The two-hour procedure went well and Daniels was listed in fair condition, university hospital spokeswoman Sarah Ellis said in a statement.

Daniels was quarantined and placed in a jail ward at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix last August under court order after medical authorities complained he was disobeying orders to wear a protective mask in public.

He was transferred earlier this month to National Jewish, which specializes in treating respiratory diseases.

National Jewish said Daniels would likely stay at the university hospital a week, then return to National Jewish for two to four weeks. Doctors said he would continue antibiotic therapy for about two years after surgery.

Dr. Gwen Huitt said Daniels may have to cut back on vigorous activities but should be able to enjoy a full life.
