Getting your player ready...

Air Force quarterback Shaun Carney watched the first day of pre-season practice from the sidelines with a strained hamstring muscle.

However, coach Troy Calhoun said he expects his senior quarterback to be participating in practice in about three days.

“It’s just a slight strain of the hamstring,” Calhoun said. “It’s kind of a blessing in some ways because we can give more reps to our other quarterbacks. I’d be concerned if we were talking about a player who had not played a lot.

“He did it about four days ago, but he’ll get a chance to make up the conditioning. I don’t feel any urgency today. I will in about 10 days if it isn’t better.”

Practice schedule

Calhoun is giving an early wakeup call to his players in the upcoming practice schedule. The Falcons will begin practice at 8:45 a.m. today, Friday, Saturday and Monday. They’ll begin work at 8:15 Tuesday and Wednesday before beginning their regular practice routine of beginning at 4 p.m. next Thursday, the first day of classes at the academy.

Calhoun is leaning toward eliminating his only chance for a two-practice day Wednesday, saying his staff likely could provide a better quality practice with just one session.

New Uniforms

Air Force’s uniforms for the 2007 season will have less stripes, with a basic blue jersey and solid silver pants with a small lightning bolt at the top. The jersey will feature a patch with the number of a deployed Air Force unit.

Calhoun said the helmet would feature the usual blue lightning bolt.

“Our uniforms will be a little bit more comfortable and a hair lighter than last year,” Calhoun said. “We wanted to make sure the lightning bolt was on the helmet. That’s Air Force football.”
