Aurora — Police say Antwan Gatlin, 27, of Denver was driving a car that fled from police Tuesday night then crashed into two others, killing one of the drivers.

Brian Gleason, 49, of Thornton died from his injuries.

The incident began when a woman telephoned police just before 8 p.m. Tuesday to say that she had been fighting with her boyfriend, who was outside in a car with a gun in front of her apartment in the 15500 block of East 12th Avenue.

Officers responded and identified Gatlin as having a previous warrant for his arrest for domestic violence, said police spokesman Bob Friel. He also was out on parole for a robbery.

“We told the female to stay inside, to stay away from him until the officers could get there because we were worried for her safety,” Friel said.

Officers pulled the suspect’s gray Dodge Intrepid over, but he soon fled. Police chased him briefly but gave it up for such a minor offense.

Gatlin ran a red light and smashed broadside into a minivan driven by Gleason in the intersection of Smith Road and Chambers Street.

Another vehicle was damaged in the accident, but the driver of that car was not hurt.

Officers found a gun inside the suspect’s vehicle, Friel said.

The entire incident went down very quickly, Friel said this afternoon. Less than 4 minutes elapsed from the time officers arriving at the scene first spotted Gatlin until he crashed in the intersection.

Gatlin is still hospitalized today, Friel said, and he is under guard.
