GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A Grand Junction woman was arrested on suspicion of abusing her infant child and was being held in the Mesa County Jail on $60,000 bond, her attorney said.

Erin DeSpain, 23, was facing five felony charges of child abuse for incidents that are alleged to have occurred between March and May.

She turned herself in to authorities Wednesday night.

An arrest affidavit said DeSpain brought a 2 month old to St. Mary’s Hospital on May 17 after she heard a cracking noise and felt something move in the baby’s back while she was changing a diaper.

Doctors said the child had several broken ribs, and was healing from various injuries including a skull fracture and a broken right femur.

DeSpain’s children have been placed in foster care.
