The Post’s Mike Klis did a bang-up job over the weekend chronicling the Hall of Fame prospects for a handful of Broncos, including one John Lynch.
With eight Pro Bowl appearances, Lynch may one day land in Canton. But then, Lynch isn’t concerned with the distant future. He’s focused on the 2007 season, which may be his last in the NFL.
Forget the Hall of Fame for a moment. The question for the here and now is this: Can Lynch, who’ll turn 36 in September, and Nick Ferguson, who’ll be 33 in November, hold up for a 16-game season?
If these two aren’t the oldest safety tandem in NFL history, they have to be close. Fact is, the Broncos planned to address the position in the draft, but bailed on their strategy when Florida defensive tackle Marcus Thomas was available in the fourth round.
Thomas was kicked off the team at Florida for smoking marijuana, but was considered the Gators’ best D lineman. When he fell into the middle stages of the draft, Mike Shanahan felt he was worth the risk. He may be right, too, but packaging three picks for Thomas cost the Broncos a chance to address the age issue at safety.
They won’t have a choice next year, when some young players will arrive to give Lynch and Ferguson some competition.
