Broncos reporter Bill Williamson provides news, notes and anecdotes from the team’s training camp today:
Fieldwork
The morning session Tuesday was chippy as coaches often barked at players and there was some pushing and shoving going on, including a shoving match between tackle Adam Meadows and linebacker Nate Webster.
After the practice, coach Mike Shanahan expressed that he was impressed with the team’s work. He said the intensity was fine but the execution left room for improvement.
“I would say we were below average today,” Shanahan said. “We have all of our installation in and we have put them in some situations that they haven’t done a lot of, such as throwing the football with different personnel groups and the two-minute drill at the end. It is something that you like to do when the players are tired because it is very realistic of what happens on game day.”
Despite his players being worn down, there were some plays to remember.
Receiver Javon Walker made a one-handed catch from Jay Cutler. And Quincy Morgan caught a touchdown on a deflected pass from cornerback Jeff Shoate.
Biography: WR Quincy Morgan
The story of the Broncos’ training camp has been the injuries to several wide receivers. None of the injuries, other than Rod Smith’s, appear serious. But the missed repetitions are giving other, healthy receivers a chance to shine.
Quincy Morgan is taking advantage of his extra time on the field. Morgan has been catching everything that has been thrown his way and is making a strong case to make the team. Last year, when he was signed during the season as a returner, the coaching staff liked what they saw in him as a receiver. And he has a pedigree. He has 164 career catches. And he had 56 grabs for 964 yards and seven touchdowns for Cleveland in 2002.
“I know I can help this team,” Morgan said. “I’m doing what it takes.”
Morgan will also get a chance to return kicks and punts.
Point after
Receiver David Terrell and Fox Sports’ Jim Miller spent time together during lunch on a picnic table, reminiscing. The two were a pass-catch combo in Chicago in 2001-02.
Quote of the day
“It’s probably the best secondary that I have been with since I began coaching. Top to bottom depth, looking at all positions, corners and safeties. Now we have to go and get it done together.”
