Amid the recent heavy rains and the forecasts for more, Summit County has removed its ban on open fires effective immediately.

Open fires are now allowed in all areas of unincorporated Summit County, according to the sheriff’s office.

Although the fire ban has been lifted, it is possible that future fire bans may need to be enacted, the sheriff’s office said in a prepared statement. Extreme caution should be exercised when burning in open areas as the potential for fire still remains.

When burning in open spaces, it is recommended that the fire be under constant supervision and fire-suppression equipment be readily available at the site, the release stated.
inadvertently reported that Grand County had lifted its fire ban, which was inaccurate. According to Undersheriff Walt Eldridge, the county commissioners were considering lifting the ban because of recent rainy weather, but the actual decision had not been made.

Eldridge said the commissioners are watching the weather and may lift the ban at next week’s meeting, but he cautioned that the ban on open flames is still active.
