Rolling Stone gathering green

The battle for Keith Richards’ autobiography has turned into the hottest auction of the summer. Bidding for a book by the Rolling Stones’ famed founding member has reached $7.1 million, according to industry sources.

London-based literary agent Ed Victor conducted the auction in New York in late July and invited three houses to offer bids, said one insider. Some publishing insiders were shaking their heads at how high the bidding has gone. “This is Bill Clinton money,” said an executive not involved with the bidding. | NewYorkBusiness.com

The Southaven brief

John Grisham’s essay about his life in high school in Southaven, Miss., is expected to bring in record sales for his alma mater’s literary magazine this year.

The best-selling novelist was born in Arkansas and lived across the South before graduating in 1973 from Southaven High. Pete Farris, a junior who worked on the magazine’s copy, layout and design, said Grisham’s contribution was a boost to all students’ contributions.

Copies of the magazine can be ordered online now at desoto.k12.ms.us/shs | The Associated Press

FIRST LINE

White Heat by Cherry Adair

Counterterrorist operative Max Aries flung a leg over the crumbling second-floor balustrade, then dropped lightly onto the narrow stone terrace. He’d spent some pretty damned phenomenal days and nights in this sixteenth-century palazzo. But he wasn’t here to seduce Emily Greene. Not this time.

“He presumed she was here. Her little yellow Maserati was parked on the street, but she hadn’t answered the doorbell when he’d rung a few minutes ago. Of course there were any number of places an attractive, single woman could be at two in the morning. If not for the urgency of her calls Max might have waited until a decent, civilized time to see her. He’d been awake for a straight ninety-seven hours, and he was punchy as hell. Sleep would’ve been good. A shower would probably be appreciated. But there hadn’t been time for either.”
