The Rockies continued their roster shuffle today because of injuries and a need for offensive production. Catcher Geronimo Gil, who worked out before today’s game against the Chicago Cubs, was activated after the team purchased his contract from the Mexico City Reds.
Gil will serve as backup to Yorvit Torrealba. Catcher Alvin Colina was optioned back to Colorado Springs.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen yet, but this could be a good opportunity for me,” Gil said.
Utilityman Clint Barmes also arrived in the Coors Field clubhouse before the game and will join the team.
The Rockies also placed pitcher Jason Hirsh on the disabled list with a broken right leg.
The Rockies haven’t determined who will make Hirsh’s start Sunday. But manager Clint Hurdle said today it will not be Taylor Buchholz or Franklin Morales. That leaves the Rockies likely to make a waiver-wire claim or to promote someone from Colorado Springs.
Gil was in spring training with the Rockies and has spent this season playing in Mexico City with the Reds of the Mexican League, where he’s hitting .396.
Gil played for Mexico in the recent Pan Am Games in Brazil, on a team managed by Vinny Castilla.
“He’s a great receiver,” Castilla said.
