Getting your player ready...

Sounds great, this notion of Jay Cutler being more comfortable in his skin than he was as a rookie. I’m just not sure it’s entirely accurate.

Let the record show that camp isn’t working out as the coaches had planned. In the Broncos’ perfect world, Brandon Marshall and Rod Smith would be on the field and Tony Scheffler would have arrived at Dove Valley completely healthy.

Instead, Marshall and Smith remain on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list and Scheffler just put on the pads after breaking his left foot in May. The absence of such go-to guys doesn’t exactly make life easy for a second-year quarterback with five NFL starts to his name.

Add to the equation a nagging case of tendinitis in his right wrist, and Cutler has a lot on his mind these days.

“A lot more,” Cutler said the other day, when asked if he felt more comfortable this season than last. “To have a year under my belt of just watching and playing a little bit, and going through this past offseason, it’s helped a lot.”

What would help more would be for his receiving corps to get on the field.
