YOU CAN DO THIS

Cabrera’s 10 on No. 6: Not good

On the 200-yard, par-3 sixth hole, U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera hit two balls out of bounds and a third into the water before taking a drop and pitching onto the green. Three putts later, the Argentine’s hopes for winning two majors this season had been extinguished. Cabrera’s 10 accounted for most of the negative portion of his 11-over 81.

YOU CAN’T DO THIS

“Serenity now!” down the tubes

Chances are there aren’t massive galleries milling about when you’re playing at the local muni – even so, don’t try this at home. When spectators crossing the ninth green in an effort to reach Tiger Woods, playing on the adjacent 18th hole, took too long to suit his fancy, John Daly merely fired away. As in over the crowd’s heads. Witnesses said the tee shot carried about 320 yards in the air.

DAZED AND CONFUSED

Ignorance is bliss

Perhaps it was the heat in Tulsa, Okla., which was, well, as hot as it was cracked up to be. Or maybe it was confirmation that pro golfers aren’t exactly rocket scientists, but there were any number of players Thursday who couldn’t recall some of the more mundane details from their opening round, or admitted there wasn’t much going on in their heads as they trudged around Southern Hills Country Club.

“I never really thought about anything,” leader Graeme Storm said after his opening round 5-under-par 65.

John Daly, two shots back, had no idea how many drivers he hit during his round, nor could he remember his score from hole to hole.

Asked for his thoughts on why he played so well, Daly confessed, “I have no idea.”

Usually, Daly occupies his own little inscrutable island on tour. On Thursday, however, being oblivious was par for the course.
