Rake, lake take toll on Pavin
Corey Pavin was the victim of an everyman sort of moment Sunday. The veteran hit his tee shot into a greenside bunker on the 200-yard, par-3 sixth hole. Before Pavin’s second shot, his caddie, Eric Schwarz, moved a rake off to the side of the green. Pavin’s second shot then landed on a slope short of the green and began rolling toward the rake, and the water. Schwarz then again moved the rake before the ball struck it, with the ball rolling into the water. However, the move violated rule 24-1, which states that an object that might influence the movement of the ball can’t be removed. He took an 8 on the hole.
SECOND SEASON
The playoffs are coming! The playoffs are coming!
The conclusion of the PGA Championship usually marks the time of year when many star players begin winding down their seasons. Last year, for example, neither Tiger Woods nor Phil Mickelson played in the Tour Championship. That’s not likely to be the case this year. Besides the upcoming Presidents Cup team competition against a squad of international players, there’s also the inaugural FedEx Cup playoffs to consider.
That four-event, year-end tournament begins at the Barclays in New York in two weeks, continuing to Boston (Deutsche Bank Championship) and Chicago (BMW Championship) before concluding at the Tour Championship in Atlanta.
Many players have expressed confusion at some of the details of the playoffs. K.J. Choi said recently if he won, he would donate the $10 million first prize to charity, unaware that the payment actually will be made in the form of an annuity. Even so, after Woods’ victory at the PGA, however the series turns out, having him quite possibly play for another four weeks now transforms the “playoffs” from a quirky novelty to an intriguing scenario.
