An incoherent man found at a Summit County trailhead was attacked and stabbed by his girlfriend who later was found dead at their campsite with no visible injuries, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said today.
Authorities said that a search was immediately launched for the campsite after the injured man told a hiker Saturday morning that he had been stabbed and his girlfriend had died at the campsite.
Deputies, members of the Breckenridge Police Department and search and rescue located the campsite after searching for several hours near the North Fuller Placer trailhead where the man was found.
The campsite was located in a densely wooded area on Baldy Mountain, On entering the tent, searchers found the dead woman, according to the sheriff’s office.
The injured man was interviewed by authorities late Saturday and evidence was collected at the campsite.
“As a result of the interview process and evidence collected at the campsite, it appears the stab wound sustained by the male was inflicted by his girlfriend,” said Paulette Horr, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s department.
Among the evidence was blood found on the dead woman’s hands, investigators said.
The sheriff’s department said the couple had a domestic dispute the evening before which triggered the attack. After stabbing her boyfriend, she bandaged the wound and he fell asleep, the department said.
When he awoke Saturday morning, he discovered his partner dead and tried to hike out to get help, Horr said.
The investigation is continuing, including autopsy results on the woman’s body. No charges have been filed.
