Denver set a new record high today when the mercury climbed to 97 degrees at 12:52 p.m.

The temperature eventually peaked at 99 degrees this afternoon.

The old Denver record of 96 degrees for this date was set in 1970, then tied in 1996.Temperatures used to be measured at Stapleton Airport and now are recorded at Denver International Airport.

Brighton is expected to reach 97 today, Thornton and Northglenn 98, and Greeley 100 degrees.

Antero Reservoir recorded the lowest temperature in the state early this morning — 42 degrees.

The hottest temperature ever recorded in Colorado was 105 degrees, set on Aug. 8, 1878. That record was tied on July 28, 2005.

Temperatures in the metro area are expected to reach into the 90s for the rest of the week, with thunderstorms possible Tuesday and Wednesday.
