A drunken driver who killed a bride-to-be on her wedding day will have to serve his full 12-year prison term, a judge ruled today.
Kevin Kraft received the maximum sentence last year for the death of 25-year-old Arlene Gavrilis.
Gavrilis was killed in Aurora early on June 4, 2005, after getting final alterations on her wedding dress. The dress was found amid the wreckage of her car.
She was to marry Adam Hawkes later that day.
Kraft, who pleaded guilty in June 2006 to vehicular homicide and driving under the influence, recently completed a Department of Corrections boot camp program as part of his sentence.
At the sentencing, District Judge William Sylvester noted Kraft’s extensive driving violations, which included speeding tickets and a 2003 drunken-driving wreck that injured the other driver.
Today at the Arapahoe County Justice Center, Sylvester denied Kraft’s motion to reconsider his sentence. The judge noted the prior conviction in which Kraft did not complete his alcohol-rehabilitation program.
Family members of Kraft, including his parents and sister, attended the hearing.
The family of Gavrilis also was present. Her brother George asked Sylvester not to reduce the sentence.
