Air Force Academy — Air Force coach Troy Calhoun had his fingers crossed at today’s practice and not because of the thunderstorm and lightning that forced the Falcons to work inside the Field House.
Calhoun’s main concern was getting the results of an MRI on starting free safety Chris Thomas. The sophomore from Westerville, Ohio, missed practice with a knee injury. Thomas had moved ahead of veteran Bobby Giannini at free safety in Air Force’s depth chart announced Monday.
“We’ll know today, but we have to make sure there’s nothing torn in his knee,” Calhoun said. “We’ll know in the next 24 hours.”
The weather forced Calhoun to Plan B for the day’s practice. He had planned to practice in Falcon Stadium, but said he still was able to adjust his practice schedule to take advantage of the time.
“We were going to do this practice at some point anyway,” Calhoun said. “We moved it up to today.”
Calhoun indicated he wouldn’t make any personnel decisions off the practice, but noted some interesting competition is shaping up at the backup quarterback between junior Shea Smith and freshman Will McAngus.
“Will McAngus has some ability,” Calhoun said. “He throws well and he moves well. We started to see the light come on with him today. The first couple of days those eyelids were probably wide open.”
