First, Mike Shanahan and his brain trust shake things up by dumping Gerard Warren and moving unheralded former practice teamer Amon Gordon into the starting lineup, at least for the time being.
Then comes word that Nate Webster may move in as the No. 1 right-outside linebacker ahead of Louis Green.
Naturally, you’re thinking the Broncos’ biggest issues are on the defensive line. If so, don’t.
Let’s crunch the numbers. For all their defensive issues late last season, the Broncos allowed 305 points. How significant is that number? Consider this: They allowed 319 the last time they won the Super Bowl.
The Broncos’ biggest concerns are on offense, where six new starters are being integrated into the lineup compared to the team that reported to Champ Shanny ’06. The list includes a new quarterback, tailback, tight end, wide receiver, right guard and right tackle.
Oh, and did I mention the left side of the line – guard Ben Hamilton and tackle Matt Lepsis – has missed most of camp?
Shanahan says the Broncos have enough strength in numbers on the D-line to offset the departure of Warren. Question is, will they be productive enough offensively? They scored 319 points in ’06, the second-lowest total of the Shanahan era.
