Westbound Interstate 70 at Vail was closed for several hours this afternoon after a westbound semi-tractor trailer rear-ended a car, causing a pile up involving five other vehicles, according to Town of Vail spokeswoman Suzanne Silverthorn.

The accident occurred near mile marker 174 around 2 p.m. today. I-70 was shut down for more than 2 hours.

Four people were injured. One was airlifted to a hospital. Their conditions are unknown.

During the closure, traffic was rerouted to frontage roads.

Vail police and Colorado State Patrol are investigating the accident.
