Frying Pan flush
Water releases of up to 300 cubic feet per second from Ruedi Dam that began Aug. 10 serve a dual purpose of helping endangered native fish far downstream, while also flushing sediment that clogs trout waters on the Frying Pan River upstream from Basalt.
A mud flow from an Aug. 6 flood on Seven Castles Creek, a Frying Pan tributary below the dam, dumped a massive amount of sediment into the river, disrupting fishing all the way downstream through the lower Roaring Fork River and into the Colorado River below Glenwood Springs.
Officials hope the elevated flow, designed to boost endangered species on the Colorado River near Grand Junction, will help remove the sediment in the trout streams.
