Part of Arapahoe Avenue in central Boulder is currently closed because of a large water-main break.

The break occurred about 3:30 this afternoon. Crews have closed Arapahoe between Broadway and 14th Street, just west of Boulder High School. Traffic is being diverted to Canyon Boulevard.

Andrew Barth, a spokesman for Boulder’s Public Works Department, said rush-hour traffic is backing up on both Arapahoe and Broadway because of the closure.

“It is a good-sized main break,” Barth said. “Right now, we’re trying to pinpoint the location.”

Barth said crews don’t have an estimate on when Arapahoe would reopen.
