The Broncos signed veteran defensive end John Browning the other day.

John Browning? What, Deacon Jones wasn’t available?

Browning was the Chiefs’ third-round draft pick in 1996, a lifetime ago by NFL player standards. If you’re wondering where he fits into the picture at Dove Valley, don’t. If Browning plays a down for the Broncos during the regular season, you’ll know they’re in big trouble.

The significance of his signing is this: It shows the Broncos have depth issues on the D-line, where Ebenezer Ekuban is out for the season and Gerard Warren has been dispatched to the Raiders.

It isn’t just the defensive line, though. The Broncos are looking for a backup at offensive tackle, too, what with rookie Ryan Harris having undergone back surgery and veteran Adam Meadows hobbling on a strained calf. And while we’re on the subject, they could use another linebacker, too.

Jeremiah Trotter? Trotter is expected to land with the Bucs, but the Broncos, given their lack of depth at the position, would have to have an interest.

Depth. It’s what’s for dinner in the NFL, where the salary cap keeps most teams from having it.
