DENVER—Colorado Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave has asked federal regulators to give the public more time to comment on a proposed uranium mine in Weld County.

The Republican says she sent a letter today to the chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission seeking to the extend the comment period past the deadline of Sept. 4. She says the potential impacts to the rural communities are too great not to give residents ample time to review the ramifications on health, safety and the economy.

Musgrave previously asked regulators to consider the effects on water quality.

Powertech, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, has proposed a $20 million uranium mine near the farming and ranching community of Nunn about 70 miles north of Denver.
