The tutor hit by a car during a police chase Wednesday afternoon is in fair condition today at St. Anthony’s Central Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman said Edith Mack didn’t wish to speak with the media.

Mack has been an English language tutor at Molholm Elementary School in Lakewood for the past eight years, Molholm principal Joan Chavez said today. According to a short biography of Mack on the Molholm website, Mack has a degree in psychology and was a teacher and school principal in Mexico.

Mack was leaving the school after a meeting yesterday afternoon when the accident happened, and Chavez said one of the school’s teachers saw Mack’s car flip upside-down in the crash. But Chavez said Mack is sitting in a chair today, talking with a physical therapist and starting to work toward recovery.

“Her first concerns were for her own children and for the kids here,” Chavez said. “She was apologetic about not being able to be here today.”

Chavez said school staff and a social worker went into classrooms today to tell students about what happened and to answer questions. She said she is also sending a letter home to parents.

“The kids are writing cards to her and wishing her the best,” Chavez said.
