A sixth-grade girl is on life support today after a driver ran a red light and hit the car in which she was riding, police say.
The 11-year-old girl, Mercedes King, was being driven by her 19-year-old brother, Marcus King, to Kearney Middle School in Commerce City around 7:30 this morning when they were hit.
The two were traveling westbound on 60th Avenue in a Dodge Neon when a Pontiac Grand Prix headed southbound on Monaco ran a red light and broadsided the Neon on the passenger side, said Sgt. Joe Sandoval of the Commerce City Police Department.
The young girl was taken to Children’s Hospital, where she is on life support, Sandoval said. Her brother broke his arm.
Yesica Moreno, the 24-year-old driver of the Grand Prix, was not injured.
All three people were wearing seat belts, Sandoval said.
An investigation is ongoing to determine what charges, if any, will be filed.
