Castle View Sabercats
Coach: Ryan Hollingshead
2006 record: 2-8
Returning starters: 11 offense, 11 defense
Last playoff appearance: None
Strength: The option offense could do some damage.
Weakness: Still a young school with some growing pains.
Players to watch: Mike Booth, Jr., DL, 6-1, 225; Will Gelroth, Jr., LB, 6-1, 180; Eric Harding, So., OL-DL, 6-4, 230; Dakota Klossner, Jr., RB, 5-8, 160; Alex Leatherman, So., SS, 5-10, 165; L.A. McGee, Jr., QB, 6-0, 175; Nathan Worts, Jr., OL-DL, 6-2, 190.
In 2007: The Sabercats need to win some games that they are not supposed to for a marked improvement over last season. But an enhanced defensive line, the abilities of quarterback L.A. McGee and a year of maturation for a team that featured freshmen and sophomores almost exclusively a year ago forecast a brighter future.

D’Evelyn Jaguars
Coach: Jeremy Bennett
2006 record: 7-3
Returning starters: 9 offense, 10 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2003
Strength: A high-flying offensive scheme with three or four threats at receiver.
Weakness: Finding a way to the postseason with only one league team guaranteed a spot.
Players to watch: Anthony Baldassari, Sr., WR, 6-0, 175; Alex Crabb, Jr., CB, 6-1, 190; Josiah Flack, So., MLB, 6-0, 190; James Holland, Sr., TE, 6-4, 230; Jordan Keho, Sr., WR, 5-11, 170; Charlie Parpheymuller, Jr., FS, 6-1, 185; Mitch Strohlien, Jr., OL, 6-4, 255.
In 2007: The potential is there for a run into late November. Now it’s a matter of turning that into reality. Projected starting quarterback Garrett Griffiths has some big shoes to fill, but if he plays within the system, his coach said this season’s offense will be better than one that produced two 1,000-yard receivers last year.

Jefferson Saints
Coach: Harry Burnham
2006 record: 0-10
Returning starters: Unavailable
Last playoff appearance: 1996
Strength: The defensive line has potential.
Weakness: Overcoming a streak of 37 losses in a row.
Players to watch: Jacob Chapa, Jr., QB, 5-10, 165; Dustin Garcia, So., WR-CB, 5-11, 150; Justin Espinoza, Sr., LB, 5-10, 170; Travis Madrid, Sr., TE-DE, 6-2, 220; Frank Van Amburg, Sr., FB-LB, 5-9, 170.

Mountain Range Mustangs
Coach: Joe Bravo
2006 record: 3-7
Returning starters: 11 offense, 11 defense
Last playoff appearance: None
Strength: Fierce competition across the board; team speed.
Weakness: Size is concern for this second-year team.
Players to watch: Tony Bersonette, Jr., H-back, 6-1, 190; Logan Blackburn, Jr., LB, 6-0, 200; Dylan Buonanato, So., QB, 5-8, 175; Brandon Gallegos, Jr., OL-DL, 5-11, 220; Zach Hartman, So., RB, 5-11, 190; Tyler Marsette, So., FS, 5-11, 165; Ryan Tuley, Jr., ILB, 6-0, 210.
In 2007: The ‘Stangs will make the tremendous leap from 3A to 5A after this season, so signs of progress are key. Their school is next to a brand-new stadium in one of the most visible locations in Colorado of any prep athletics venue, just west of Interstate 25 at about 124th Avenue. Coach Bravo said his squad possesses a “positive cockiness” and the outlook is vastly different from the inaugural campaign.

Prairie View Thunderhawks
Coach: Rod Dobbs
2006 record: 1-9
Returning starters: 9 offense, 9 defense
Last playoff appearance: None
Strength: New faces are itching for a starting role.
Weakness: Injuries are a concern for an already nicked-up team.
Players to watch: Erik Fritch, Fr., QB; Gilbert Garcia, Jr., SS; Marquis McNeil, So., FB; Eddie Powell, Jr., RB-spec.; Steven Sheets, Jr., OLB; Brian Wilson, Jr., MLB.
In 2007: Coach Dobbs has the future in mind as he introduces Fritch as the starting quarterback, but Dobbs is not ignoring the present. The young squad has solidified in terms of goals and aspirations, and that is to not only get better but to start establishing a tradition for future classes.

Rock Canyon Jaguars
Coach: Tom Lynch
2006 record: 7-3
Retuning starters: 2 offense, 2 defense
Last playoff appearance: None
Strength: About 80 players will suit up for varsity, so depth is not an issue.
Weakness: The Help Wanted sign hangs over the door at nearly every position.
Players to watch: Ed Ferguson, Sr., OL-LB, 6-1, 185; Martin Hughes, Sr., OL-LB, 6-4, 210; Brad Salus, Jr., RB, 5-7, 150.
In 2007: The Jaguars missed the 2006 playoffs by a 10th of a point in the wild-card standings, and coach Lynch wants that bitterness to turn into aggression this season. Competition has heated up, and starting roles are up for the taking among a group of hopefuls that numbers more than 120 in the program.

Summit Tigers
Coach: Dylan Hollingsworth
2006 record: 12-1
Returning starters: 7 offense,7 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2006, lost 34-7 to Pueblo County in the semifinal round
Strength: The defense in general, linebackers specifically.
Weakness: Following up a season unprecedented in school history.
Players to watch: Scott Campbell, Sr., LB, 6-0, 198; Zach Campbell, Jr., OL-DT, 5-11, 235; Landon Greeve, Jr., Ath.-P, 6-1, 178; Stephen Ike, Jr., WR-CB, 5-10, 155; Stephen Lassa, Jr., TE-DE, 6-1, 205; Talon Roggasch, Jr., QB-LB, 6-0, 198; Peter Secor, Jr., C, 5-11, 215; Jordan Sitowski, Jr., FB-MLB, 6-1, 225; Cody Thomas, So., TB, 5-8, 155.
In 2007: The coach emphasized that the Tigers’ record is 0-0 right now, and memories of an undefeated regular season a year ago are fond but forgotten. The starting quarterback, center and fullback have 69 combined starts between them, so on-the-field leadership should not be a concern.

NORTH METRO
Alameda Pirates
Coach: Ron Johnson
2006 record: 5-5
Returning starters: 5 offense, 5 defense
Last playoff appearance: 1992
Strength: Varied offensive attack mixed supported by an unyielding line.
Weakness: The receiving corps is talented, but they have to prove they can catch the ball.
Players to watch: Jose Atencio, Sr., OL-DT, 5-10, 248; Santiago Castillo, Sr., RB-SS, 5-7, 170; Sean Giroir, Jr., TE-LB-K, 6-4, 196; Devan Gregory, Sr., TE-DE, 6-5, 205; Alex Nguyen, Jr., HB, 5-10, 185; Nick Nguyen, Sr., QB-FS, 5-11, 192; Zach Rugg, Sr., C, 5-9, 185; Ben Vollmuth, Sr., OL-DE, 6-4, 240.
In 2007: Johnson has been a run-oriented coach for 32 years, but that doesn’t mean he’s afraid to adjust his approach for the talent on hand. This season will be different as the coach is employing a spread-option offense based on Urban Meyer’s championship design.
Centaurus Warriors
Coach: Chad Senseney
2006 record: 5-6
Returning starters: 5 offense, 4 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2006, lost 28-0 to Palisade in the first round
Strength: The offensive line, notably the left side, can create room for the backs.
Weakness: Starters need to make themselves known at a handful of positions.
Players to watch: Chris Barron, Sr., OL, 5-11, 190; David Dishman, Sr., TE, 6-1, 180; Drake Fontana, Sr., CB, 5-8, 160; Cory Fredrich, Sr., QB, 5-9, 160; Garrett Lanham, Sr., OLB, 6-1, 180; Jordan Mellott, Sr., OL, 6-3, 260; Ray Navarette, Sr., FB, 5-10, 185; Ryan Rubeck, Jr., DL, 6-2, 235; Josh Sipes, Sr., RB, 5-7, 165; Derek Wetzel, Jr., LB, 5-10, 175.
In 2007: The Warriors want to challenge for at least a league title every season, and expectations are high again. Coach Senseney is savvy and motivated, and a base of experienced talent offers the skill and strength to wade through a league that tends to devour its own.
Conifer Lobos
Coach: Larry Fitzmaurice
2006 record: 3-7
Returning starters: 5 offense, 4 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2005
Strength: The offensive scheme can turn talent into all-conference material.
Weakness: Size on the lines is lacking.
Players to watch: Mitch Chambers, Sr., OT-DT, 6-2, 215; Geoff Gilbert, Sr., DB, 5-9, 155; Jimmy Gorrell, Sr., QB, 6-2, 195; Willie Hayes, TB-SS, Jr., 5-10, 165; Joe Hennessy, Sr., FB-DE, 5-8, 160; Zach Lines, Sr., OL-MLB, 5-10, 200; Andy Poe, Sr., TE, 6-0, 190; Travis Stickney, Sr., FB-DE- OLB, 5-9, 160.
In 2007: The 2006 season was a bit of an anomaly for los Lobos, a team that expects to contend in the league and statewide most every season. The offense will pound the ball if it can and turn to trickery if problems arise, but the real excitement resides on the defensive side. That group has been flying around and making plays during preseason practice and scrimmages.
Elizabeth Cardinals
Coach: Chris Cline
2006 record: 5-6
Returning starters: 5 offense, 5 defense.
Last playoff appearance: 2006, lost 35-10 to Rifle in the first round
Strength: The running back is one of the classification’s best.
Weakness: Inexperience is prevalent.
Players to watch: Zach Fischer, Sr., OL, 6-0, 175; Jake Jacobson, Sr., LB, 6-0, 220; Mitch Johnson, Sr., RB, 5-9, 180; Brian Morrison, Sr., OL, 5-11, 260; David Van Voris, Jr., K, 6-0, 170.
In 2007: The Cardinals expect to make the playoffs. Johnson, running behind a quality offensive line, should have another big season. Now some other skill players just need to step up.
Englewood Pirates
Coach: Randy Penn
2006 record: 9-3
Returning starters: 6 offense, 7 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2006, lost 17-0 to Summit in the quarterfinal round
Strength: Playmakers on offensive, including a secret weapon.
Weakness: Consistency from week-to-week needs to improve.
Players to watch: Matt Burton, Sr., FB-LB, 5-10, 180; Josh Elder, Sr., WR-CB, 6-2, 180; Patrick Lowder, Sr., TE-LB, 6-1, 185; Jordan Marquez, Jr., QB, 5-10, 190; Chris Marshall, Sr., LT-DL, 6-3, 260; Bryce Penn, Sr., TB-SS, 5-9, 165; Josh Slack, Sr., C-DL, 5-10, 215; Matt Visconti, Sr., OL-DT, 5-11, 270.
In 2007: Bryce Penn, the coach’s grandson, won’t leave the field much. A crafty runner and big-play defender, he can make things happen. The school population is dwindling, but coach Penn always seems to put victories together. This season should be no exception with talent on the lines.
Evergreen Cougars
Coach: Mike Sellers
2006 record: 6-4
Returning starters: 4 offense, 3 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2004
Strength: Wide receivers and offensive backs look good.
Weakness: Some questions marks on the lines.
Players to watch: Keith Bestall, Sr., HB-OLB, 6-0, 170; Sean Conaway, Sr., WR-K-P, 6-3, 180; Cory Evans, So., LB, 5-10, 200; Greg Hoffman, Jr., QB-LB, 6-2, 215; Zach Hutchings, Sr., DB, 5-8, 165; Zach Mitchell, Sr., LG-NG, 6-0, 215; Mike Philbin, Sr., WR-CB, 5-11, 175.
In 2007: The Cougars are a team on the rise, and some speedy, long wide receivers could open up the offense. Conaway is a multiple threat, and coach Sellers said a field goal is there for the taking every time the offense reaches the opponent’s 30-yard line. But Evergreen’s hardened mentality wants seven points each time it touches the ball, not three.
Skyview Wolverines
Coach: Bill Nelson
2006 record: 3-7
Returning starters: 4 offense, 5 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2003
Strength: The coaching staff has the tools to get the program back on track.
Weakness: Finding the right players to take over as starters.
Players to watch: Michael Breese, Jr., TB-DE, 5-10, 175; Stephen Mamuzich, Jr., RB, 6-0, 215; Dominic Martinez, Sr., RB, 6-0, 215; Adam Meis, Sr., TE-DB, 6-1, 185; Greg Purett, Sr., OL, 5-11, 185; Louis Urena, Jr., OL, 5-10, 215; Ryan Witting, Sr., CB, 5-8, 150.
In 2007: Coach Nelson and his staff, now in their second season, are light years ahead of where they were this time a year ago. The team has bonded, the Wolverines’ pride of old has returned and the future looks good with a good batch of sophomores and juniors.
SOUTH METRO
Alamosa Mean Moose
Coach: Manny Wasinger
2006 record: 14-0
Returning starters: 3 offense, 4 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2006, beat Pueblo County 47-14 in state final
Strength: Tenacious, experienced leaders in key positions on either side of the ball.
Weakness: Finding candidates to take over after a record-setting season on offense.
Players to watch: Donovan Archuleta, Jr., WR-RB-LB, 5-7, 155; Bobby Cody, Jr., OL, 6-3, 235; Arthur Espinoza, Sr., OL-DL, 5-9, 180; Brian Ford, Jr., TE-LB, 6-3, 210; Donovan Marquez, Sr., QB-LB-DB, 5-9, 165; Jordan Reedes, Sr., WR-DE, 6-4, 190; Cody Yohn, Sr. TB-LB, 5-11, 175.
In 2007: The old Maroons will scale back an offense that spoiled the local fans and rewrote portions of the state record book, but that doesn’t mean Alamosa’s home turf will become a ghost town during the postseason. Veteran linebackers Cody Yohn, a state champion wrestler, and Brian Ford will bring an overlooked defense into the spotlight.
Falcon Falcons
Coach: Jason Catron
2006 record: 4-6
Returning starters: 6 offense, 8 defense
Last playoff appearance: 1992
Strength: Senior-laden and experienced, especially on defense.
Weakness: In a tough league, ending the playoff drought is tough.
Players to watch: Keenen Ballage, Sr., RB, 5-9, 180; Brenden Condon, Sr., OT-DT, 6-2, 215; Matt DeGeorge, Sr., WR-DB, 5-9, 170; Lucas Musseau, Sr., OL-DT, 6-2, 190; Vahn Plambeck, Sr., TE-DE, 5-11, 200; Eric Perez, Sr., TE-DE, 6-2, 210.
In 2007: There is a sense at Falcon that things are changing for the program. Ballage, at running back, is as fast as they come — he is the reigning 100-meter champion in 4A. That is a good thing, because the offense needs to step up and help out a defense that carried the burden last season.
Florence Huskies
Coach: Mark Buderus
2006 record: 10-3
Returning starters: 6 offense, 6 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2006, lost 21-20 to Alamosa in the semifinal round
Strength: Hard-nosed philosophy and program that expects excellence.
Weakness: Getting the jitters out of the inexperienced players.
Players to watch: Jeremy Dindro, Sr., SS, 6-2, 185; Jared Huston, Sr., CB, 5-11, 150; Cody McDowell, Sr., LB, 5-11, 240; Tyler Ridgeway, Sr., FS, 6-1, 170; Thomas Trujillo, Sr., LB, 5-9, 175; Tanner Wilcox, Sr., OL-DL, 5-11, 250; Garrett Wilson, Sr., RB, 5-10, 185.
In 2007: Florence, seemingly always in the state title game or at least the semifinals, will move to 2A next season — the classification it could have been playing in for years because of its small school population. Look for the Huskies to make another deep run.
Harrison Panthers
Coach: Al Melo
2006 record: 6-5
Returning starters: 4 offense, 4 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2006, lost 52-14 to Alamosa in the first round
Strength: Talent at quarterback and skill positions.
Weakness: Some younger players will be thrown into the mix.
Players to watch: Eric Casper, Sr., OL, 6-2, 235; Demetrius Gilmore, Sr., QB, 6-0, 185; Rob Herrera, Sr., OL, 6-2, 240; Desman Jones, Jr., RB, 6-1, 170; D.J. Morman, Jr., LB, 6-1, 215.
In 2007: The Panthers suffered a tragedy last season when Fermin Vialpando died after collapsing on the field. The team and community rallied in support, and now Harrison is looking to push forward. Size on the line and skill in the offensive backfield will help that cause.
Pueblo County Hornets
Coach: Jeff Wilson
2006 record: 11-3
Returning starters: 6 offense, 5 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2006, lost 47-14 to Alamosa is Class 3A state championship game
Strength: Power and size highlight the lines.
Weakness: Replacing some key leaders from last season’s stellar run.
Players to watch: Buddy Gonzales, Sr., OL-LB, 5-10, 230; J.T. Greenhood, Sr., QB-FS, 5-10, 170; Kyle Houston, Sr., OL-DL, 5-11, 230; Jarret Martinez, Jr., OL-DL, 5-10, 240; Myles Meserve, Sr., TE-DE, 5-11, 230; Joe Pullara, RB-LB, Sr., 5-11, 190.
In 2007: It’s obvious the Hornets like to play football. They have fun when running over people or upsetting powerhouses. The success of last season tasted sweet, and this group knows that it can play with anybody. It’s been eight years since County won a league title outright, and it wants to lay claim to one now.
Ridgeview Academy Rams
Coach: Roderick Upshaw
2006 record: 2-8
Returning starters: 1 offense, 1 defense
Last playoff appearance: None
Strength: Fresh faces could surprise.
Weakness: The Rams are like a brand-new team every year.
Player to watch: Pierre Clifton-Nettles, Sr., DB, 6-0, 205.
In 2007: Coach Upshaw is trying to teach his crew life lessons on the football field, and there is always potential that a group could click and make some waves. That is the hope this season.
Woodland Park Panthers
Coach: Brent Cottrell
2006 record: 3-7
Returning starters: 4 offense, 3 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2000
Strength: The running game has potential.
Weakness: Adjusting to a new coach.
Players to watch: Ethan Beaver, Sr., TE, 6-5, 215; Dakota Brown, Sr., OL, 6-0, 265; Ben Fischer, Sr., RB, 5-10, 185.
In 2007: Cottrell takes over a team that will need to fill in at a number of positions. Beaver provides a big target at tight end, but he might do more damage as a blocker.
TRI-VALLEY
Berthoud Spartans
Coach: Dan McGinn
2006 record: 10-1
Returning starters: 6 offense, 3 defense
Last playoff appearance: Lost 21-19 to Florence in the first round
Strength: The offensive line returns intact, and all five are juniors.
Weakness: There are big shoes to fill on either side of the ball.
Players to watch: Brad Dick, Jr., OL, 6-3, 280; Alex Diffendaffer, Sr., MLB, 5-10, 215; Jordan Major, Jr., QB, 5-10, 160; Taylor Martin, Sr., DB-Spec., 5-9, 140; Bryce Muñoz, Jr., RB-Spec., 5-11, 160; Alex Summers, Sr., RB, 5-9, 165.
In 2007: The Spartans went undefeated and claimed their first league title in 20 years last season. The momentum carried through the summer, and the newest batch of upperclassmen can barely contain their enthusiasm. Attitude counts in Berthoud, a team that wants to control the ball and the tempo with its offense while maintaining on defense.
Fort Lupton Blue Devils
Coach: Mike Muedeking
2006 record: 6-5
Returning starters: 3 offense, 4 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2006, lost 28-0 to Steamboat Springs in the first round
Strength: A clock-eating option offense supported by an aggressive defense.
Weakness: Age-old concern about young, inexperienced players stepping into leading roles.
Players to watch: Jake Bernhard, So., LB, 6-0, 180; Abe Cazaras, Sr., OL-DL, 6-3, 270; Doug Fisher, Jr., OL-DL, 6-2, 295; Reece James, So., OL-DL, 6-5, 280; Abe Licea, Sr., RB-WR, 5-10, 170; Josh Martinez, So., LB, 6-0, 160; Zach Nash, Jr., QB-RB-LB, 6-0, 175; Andrew Ornelas, Jr., WR-DB, 6-0, 160; Hector Solis, Jr., RB-LB-K, 5-10, 180; Tyler Williamson, Jr., QB-Spec., 6-4, 170; Steven Woodruff, Sr. RB-DE, 6-2, 175.
In 2007: The Blue Devils ended a 15-year playoff drought last season and football fever took hold. Working out turned into a daily ritual over the summer and talked veered toward winning a conference title and hosting a game in the postseason. The potential is there with a skilled set on offense and some potentially dominating size on the lines.
Fort Morgan Mustangs
Coach: Harrison Chisum
2006 record: 3-7
Returning starters: 7 offense, 7 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2001
Strength: The offensive backfield looks good.
Weakness: These aren’t the biggest Mustangs.
Players to watch: John Bailey, Sr., WR-SS, 5-11, 180; Matt Chavez, Sr., TB-OLB, 5-8, 160; Rudy Chavez, Sr., MLB-OG, 5-8, 175; Chris Cobbley, Jr., QB, 5-8, 185; Kyle Graluf, Sr., OL-DT, 6-2, 225; Keef Montel, Jr., OLB, 5-10, 175.
In 2007: This varsity squad gained a lot of playing experience at a young age, and that has translated into a senior class that knows how to lead.
Fossil Ridge SaberCats
Coach: Clint Fick
2006 record: 4-6
Returning starters: 5 offense, 5 defense
Last playoff appearance: None
Strength: The linebackers and defensive backs are the heart of a defense that gave up just 12.5 points per game to league opponents last season.
Weakness: Though faster than a year ago, the SaberCats as a group won’t win many sprint relays.
Players to watch: Zach Carrell, Sr., OL, 6-1, 225; Zane Lanter, Sr., LB, 5-10, 190; Brian Leistikow, Jr., QB, 6-0, 190; Greg Rushing, Sr., SS, 5-11, 180; Bart Panella, Sr., CB, 5-6, 145; Shawn Salisbury, Sr., OL, 6-0, 190.
In 2007: This should be the last season in 3A for the growing school. The large student population is starting to be reflected in the football program, with close to 115 players checking out shoulder pads and helmets. The SaberCats want to set a positive tone through the difficult early schedule, and success or failure could come down to team chemistry. Coach Fick, who is in his second season at the newest Fort Collins school, won a Class 3A state championship with Faith Christian in 1998, and in 2005 he directed Thompson Valley to a rare winning season, with a 26-20 upset over Loveland along the way, and two playoff victories before falling to eventual champion ThunderRidge in the Class 4A semifinals. Fossil Ridge was 0-20 all time before Fick’s arrival last season.
Frederick Warriors
Coach: Thad Lear
2006 record: 7-4
Returning starters: 4 offense, 5 defense
Last playoff appearance: Lost 12-7 to Englewood in the first round
Strength: Lear’s decade-old program has roots now.
Weakness: The line is a concern.
Players to watch: Bryant King, Sr., RB-DB, 6-1, 180; Josh Johnson, Sr., OL-DL, 5-10, 225; David Lamb, Sr., QB-FS, 5-10, 160; Alfonso Serna, Sr., OL-DL, 5-9, 235; Luke Witty, Sr., TE-DE, 6-4, 180.
In 2007: After many years of struggle, the Warriors made the playoffs last year and now are full-fledged contenders for a league title. Nothing less is expected than another successful season and a repeat postseason appearance, and the younger players have shown potential as they prepare to step into the Friday night lights at Alex Tesone Field. The junior varsity team went 8-2 last season, and the sophomore team finished 7-3.
Silver Creek Raptors
Coach: Mike Apodaca
2006 record: 6-4
Last playoff appearance: 2005
Coach Apodaca did not return repeated calls for comment.
Sterling Tigers
Coach: Mark Bauder
2006 record: 9-2
Returning starters: 2 offense, 3 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2006, lost 28-14 to Pueblo County in the first round
Strength: Running back on offense; linebackers on defense.
Weakness: The Tigers will be a bit green.
Players to watch: Quwuan Carrillo, Sr., DB, 5-10, 195; Lee Meisner, SR., RB-LB, 6-0, 205; Pat Mertens, Jr., OL-DL, 6-4, 230.
In 2007: A number of younger players will step onto the field, so inexperience will be a concern in the early weeks. But this established program understands how to reload, and a league with four new coaches is ripe for the taking.
Valley Vikings
Coach: Ryan Wehrman
2006 record: 3-7
Returning starters: 3 offense, 4 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2005
Strength: The offensive and defensive lines.
Weakness: New schemes are in place with the new coaching staff.
Players to watch: Geoff Betz, Sr., OL-DL, 6-2, 215; Brandon Contreras, Sr., QB, 5-9, 170; Ben Dellenbach, Jr., OL-DL, 6-3, 220; Brandon Frank, Jr., 6-2, 190; LB, Alex Schneider, Sr., WR, 5-11, 170.
In 2007: Wehrman brings almost a decade of experience as a head coach. He has some good size on the lines to help get the squad kick-started.
Windsor Wizards
Coach: Chris Jones
2006 record: 1-9
Returning starters: 5 offense, 5 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2002
Strength: The offense can be dangerous if it clicks.
Weakness: The heart is there, not necessarily the size.
Players to watch: Luke Brough, Sr., TE-MLB, 6-0, 195; Sam Collentine, Jr., RB-OLB, 5-7, 180; Justin Donahoo, Sr., RB-OLB, 5-10, 170; Nathan Folbrecht, Sr., RB-OLB; 5-10, 175; Chris Gabriel, Sr., OL-NG, 5-10, 230; Tanner Glahn, Sr., OL-DT, 6-4, 215; Jay Hess, Jr., WR-FS, 6-1, 160; Zach Miller, Sr., WR-OLB, 6-2, 180; Donovon Suman, Sr., FB-OLB, 5-9, 200; Adam Winick, Sr., QB, 6-1, 170.
In 2007: In a blast from the past, Windsor will employ a wing-T offensive scheme. The focus is on the basics in the early going — blocking and tackling. The offense will be simple, but the few plays the team will run should be effective.
WESTERN SLOPE
Battle Mountain Huskies
Coach: Jason Sedlak
2006 record: 4-6
Returning starters: 4 offense, 4 defense
Last playoff appearance: 1991
Strength: Symbiosis. Coach Sedlak took over when the current crop of seniors were freshmen.
Weakness: Just three juniors on the roster; half the starters will play offense and defense.
Players to watch: Lucas Brown, Jr., OL-DL, 6-1, 250; Ryan Hedrick, Sr., TB-SS, 6-0, 195 TB-SS; Ascher Robbins, Sr., WR-CB, 5-9, 150; Billy Shue, Sr., OL-DE, 6-2, 240; Todd Walker, Sr., QB-WR-DB, 6-0, 165 DB-QB; Jeremy Windham, Sr., QB, 5-11, 155.
In 2007: Entirely new offensive and defensive schemes have been instituted, which could cause some issues — or maybe not. Expect to see the ball in Hedrick’s hands after he ran for 1,300 yards in 8-1/2 games last season. If speed and potential combine successfully, the Huskies might rise up as a surprise playoff team in the classification’s toughest league.
Delta Panthers
Coach: Kirk McLaughlin
2006 record: 3-6
Returning starters: 5 offense, 6 defense
Last playoff appearance: 1999
Strength: Bulk of senior class has two years of starting experience.
Weakness: Find a way to start giving lumps and stop taking them.
Players to watch: Andrew Aragon, Sr., OL-DL, 6-5, 275; Tyler Gieck, Sr., WR-DB, 5-10, 160; Brenton Hines, Sr., WR-DB, 6-1, 160; Kevin Osbourne, Sr., QB, 6-2, 185; Luke Schmalz, Sr., RB-LB, 6-2, 210; Steven Vigil, Sr., OL-DL, 6-2, 215.
In 2007: The Panthers will tweak their offensive schemes a bit while keeping the defense mostly the same. The overall depth is good, and the offensive line and backs have some skill.
Eagle Valley Devils
Coach: John Ramunno
2006 record: 3-7
Returning starters: 5 offense, 5 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2005
Strength: Quality running back tandem behind big line.
Weakness: Program numbers down a bit.
Players to watch: Pollo Almanza, Jr., OL-DT, 6-3, 240; Hunter Blevins, Sr., QB-P, 6-1, 170; Kevin Mansfield, Sr., S, 6-3, 165; Paul Suther, Sr., C-DT, 6-0, 270; Zack Thrall, Jr., OL-DT, 6-3, 285; Nick Whitehead, Sr., RB-LB, 5-10, 190.
In 2007: The Devils will pursue consistency. They upset a playoff team last season but ended up losing some games they probably should have won. The plan on offense is to get the running game going and then attack with the play-action pass.
Glenwood Springs Demons
Coach: Rocky Whitworth
2006 record: 4-6
Returning starters: 7 offense, 8 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2004
Strength: This offense has potential to ignite the Western Slope.
Weakness: Tall, thin lumber turns to ash quicker than the thicker trunks in the league.
Players to watch: Nick Croissant, Sr., OL-LB, 5-10, 180; Keenan Hartert, Jr., LB, 5-10, 180; Donnie Jennert, Jr., WR-DE, 6-6, 200; Tyler Larson, Sr., DB, 6-1, 170; Alex McPherson, Sr., S, 6-2, 180; Ryan Montover, Sr., LB, 5-10, 170; Connor Riley, Jr., WR, 6-2, 170; Tyler Rossow, Sr., OL-DL, 6-0, 180; Kevin Screen, Jr., RB-spec., 5-8, 150; Dakota Stonehouse, Jr., QB, 6-0, 175; Lance Tsosie, Sr., RB-DB, 6-0, 180;
In 2007: Every coach in the league mentioned the threat Dakota Stonehouse presents, and the Demons have excelled in the recent past with an explosive offense and special-teams play. Glenwood Springs is a rarity in the ground-it-out league, preferring to use quickness where it lacks in size.
Moffat County Bulldogs
Coach: Kip Hafey
2006 record: 5-6
Returning starters: 6 offense, 6 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2006, lost to Summit in the first round
Strength: This senior class could do big things.
Weakness: A new defensive backfield must pass the test.
Players to watch: Jake Bricker, Sr., QB, 5-11, 160; Dylan Guinn, Sr., OL-DL, 5-11, 240; J.T. Haddan, Sr., FB-MLB, 6-2, 215; Austin Hill, Sr., OL-DL, 6-1, 215; Paul Nelson, Sr., WR-DB, 5-11 160; Tyler Roach, Sr., WR-DB, 5-10, 150; Drew Turner, Sr., WR-DB, 5-10, 150; Travis Wilson, Sr., C-NG, 6-2, 265.
In 2007: The Bulldogs have been to the playoffs four of the past five seasons, and if they stay injury-free it could happen again this season. The first half of the schedule will tell Moffat County where it stands.
Montezuma-Cortez Panthers
Coach: Tom Adair
2006 record: 2-8
Returning starters: 8 offense, 8 defense
Last playoff appearance: 1994
Strength: Last season’s record doesn’t reflect the team’s competitiveness.
Weakness: Must find a way to win the close games.
Players to watch: Drew Brock, Sr., TE-OLB, 6-4, 185; Logan Case, Jr., QB-FS, 6-1, 175; Chet Harris, Sr., OL, 5-11, 210; Noah Herman, Sr., FB-LB, 6-1, 200; Caleb Hollar, Jr., TB-LB, 5-10, 190; Anthony Maestas, Sr., SE-CB, 6-1, 175; Hayden Moorehead, Jr., OL-DT, 6-7, 320; Matt Schuster, Jr., C-DT, 6-2, 245; Tyler Scott, Sr., RG-DE, 6-1, 210; Luke Simms, Sr., LT, 5-11, 220; Keenan Tibbets, Jr., SB-CB, 5-10, 165.
In 2007: The defense will switch to a 5-2, and the offense will spread the field and allow the backs to run through the gaps. The line has good size and has shown toughness.
Palisade Bulldogs
Coach: John Arledge
2006 record: 8-4
Returning starters: 7 offense, 8 defense
Last playoff appearance: 2006, lost 21-18 to Florence in the quarterfinal round
Strength: The always-powerful offensive line and running game.
Weakness: Staying healthy.
Players to watch: Jack Adair, Jr., RB-CB, 5-9, 172; Jake Appling, Sr., QB-FS, 6-0, 168; Mike Elder, Sr., OL-LB, 5-10, 175; Jesse Kirstatter, Sr., TB-LB, 6-3, 212; Chance Kittel, Sr., WR-CB, 6-0, 175; Billy Logsdon, Sr., TE-SS, 6-1, 198; Josh Strong, Sr., OL-DT, 5-10, 220; Aaron Wagler, Jr., FB-DE, 5-11, 198; Matt Young, Jr., WR-OLB, 6-3, 178.
In 2007: Injuries were a major factor last season, but the Bulldogs still won a playoff game. The familiar physical Palisade running backs are in place, and the offense should be more balanced. The defense, however, is drawing plenty of attention, and it could be the best this school has had in years.
Rifle Bears
Coach: Damon Wells
2006 record: 8-4
Returning starters: 4 offense, 4 defense
Last playoff appearance: Lost 34-26 to Alamosa in the quarterfinal round
Strength: A tradition that plugs in players year after year.
Weakness: A new high school is draining the school population.
Players to watch: Drew Blatchford, Sr., WR-DB, 6-4, 175; Drew Burgess, So., WR-DB, 5-9, 150; Tyler Chapman, Sr., RB-DB, 5-11, 160; Tad Davis, Jr., OL-LB, 6-1, 250; Keefer Deere, Jr., OL-LB, 5-10, 180; Abram Dennis, Sr., RB-DE, 5-11, 195; Dano Fugita, Jr., OLB, 5-11, 160; Corey King, Sr., DT, 6-3, 280; Daniel Maldonado, Sr., RB-DB, 5-10, 170; Hazen Moss, Sr., QB-RB-LB-K-P, 6-1, 190; Brian Pkui, Jr., RB-DB, 6-1, 215; Ryan Rebhan, Jr., QB, 5-10, 160; Justin Stone, Sr., C-DT, 6-3, 265.
In 2007: Coach Wells says this squad has all the potential, but it’s up to them to make it happen. The Bears are not afraid to hit, and they fly around the field looking for big plays.
Steamboat Springs Sailors
Coach: Aaron Finch
2006 record: 10-2
Returning starters: 4 offense, 5 defense
Last playoff appearance: Lost 41-7 to Pueblo County in the quarterfinal round
Strength: Jay Hanley is a force at running back.
Weakness: Replacing a group of top-notch linebackers.
Players to watch: Ahmad Akkad, Sr., LT, 6-2, 200; Ben DeLine, Sr., K, 6-0, 165; Nigel Hammond, Sr., OLB, 5-10, 175; Jay Hanley, Sr., RB, 6-0, 240; Cole Krahenbuhl, Sr., DB, 5-10, 165; Mac Marsh, Sr., RT-DE, 6-3 220.
In 2007: With DeLine (committed to CSU) kicking off, the Sailors won’t have to worry about covering too many kicks. The running game will determine the fate of the offense, and the defense is solid on the ends. The middle of the defense will be a concern until the younger players establish themselves.
