David Beckham missed his party at the Church on Sunday night. But up until Sunday evening, organizers held hopes that Becks would somehow arrive.
By 11 p.m. not one person from the Galaxy had arrived at the Church – and my spies gave up the ghost. About 150 people came to the party hoping against hope that they might meet the playa. They sat in the VIP lounge with no VIPs.
“It was a total embarrassment,” said one attendee. “This is a sad day for soccer.”
But it isn’t just BoomCloud (the party organizer that did not return calls Monday) that has egg on its face. The entire Denver experience for Beckham was mishandled. Especially the news that he was too “tired” to come to town – after he races around the world for a “friendly” game in London.
Denver-based Phil Anschutz writes this guy a paycheck for $32.5 million, and Becks can’t make it to Phil’s hometown for a howdy-do?
The Rapids hardly offer an apology, certainly no refunds for the 18,000 ticket holders. Not even a complimentary snow cone. The Rapids say they sell tickets for a game, not for one player. That’s like sending in the E Street Band without Bruce.
And that’s no way to build a fan base.
Jake hands off to Jay
Jake Plummer’s annual party at Morton’s DTC was always a hit. Great wines, shrimp the size of boomerangs, endless hunks of tenderloin, rivers of martinis, lotsa dames – and a band if you gotta dance.
Jake’s gone – so here comes Jay Cutler and his foundation to head up the Morton’s party Sept. 17. And Jay’s nicer than Jake – which should mean even more fun.
Tix are $150 to $250 (includes VIP reception); call Milli King at 303-409-1180.
Elway sightings
John Elway was spotted Saturday night having dinner at the new seafood house Oceanaire.
You can also see No.7 in the upcoming Cooking with Paula Deen magazine in a story titled “Supreme Steakhouse.” A full-page pic of Elway, chef Tyler Wiard and GM Tom Moxcey starts it off. We get recipes for Elway’s ribeye steak (not too difficult if you have steak, salt, pepper and butter) and Elway’s banana cream pie.
Dawn days
Denver society chronicler Dawn Denzer died in May. But her memory will live on, thanks to the first Dawn Denzer Community Leader Award, to be presented Oct. 6 at the Costumes for a Cause party for the Colorado Neurological Institute. Great idea.

Crews for Eddie Murphy’s movie “NowhereLand” have been in town shooting at Riverfront Park. And a part as an extra in the movie was auctioned off Saturday night at the Children’s Hospital Buckaroo Ball at Sen. Tom Wiens’ Sedalia ranch.
