In a scheduling coincidence, five of baseball’s six division leaders played games against their division’s second-place teams Tuesday.
The NL West and NL Central divisions have the most at stake. The Padres moved within a game of the Diamondbacks with a 6-4 win, while the Cubs beat the slumping Brewers 5-3 to drop Milwaukee into third place.
In the American League, the Yankees kept their faint hopes of catching the Red Sox alive with a 5-3 victory over Boston. New York is now seven games back.
