Denver Fire Chief Larry Trujillo is leaving his post after being granted early retirement starting Saturday, city officials announced Wednesday.

The 25-year veteran of the Denver Fire Department had applied for an early pension in June because of an on-the-job back injury that has bothered him for seven years.

Trujillo has been Denver’s chief for four years.

In a statement, Mayor John Hickenlooper thanked Trujillo for his service and dedication.

“Chief Trujillo will be greatly missed, and we wish him the best,” he said.

Deputy Chief James Sestrich will be interim chief of the department until a permanent appointment is made by Hickenlooper.
