DENVER—Fort Carson, already scheduled to get 8,000 more troops by 2011, is one of 17 posts being considered for six new brigades the Army wants to recruit.
Army Times reported the proposal Friday, based on an announcement by the Army in the Federal Register.
The Army, stretched by the war in Iraq, wants to add 74,000 soldiers to the regular Army and reserves. Of these, 35,000 would be active duty members of six new brigade combat teams.
The Army is seeking comments from residents of the areas around the posts, said Bob DiMichele, a spokesman for the Army’s Environmental Command.
The Environmental Protection Agency, in a report in June, said that by 2011 there will be almost 60,000 soldiers, civilian employees and dependents at Fort Carson. The Iraq war has delayed the transfer of some troops to Fort Carson, which is expected to be home to at least 25,000 in the coming years.
