BOULDER, Colo.—University of Colorado officials say their efforts to recruit black students are paying off.

The university has been trying to recruit minorities for years, and has had success with other groups but not blacks.

This year there are 102 black freshmen in the Class of 2011, a 24 percent increase over last year and one of the largest classes of black students in CU’s history.

Efforts to recruit them were expanded, even including having enrolled students write potential black students to urge them to come to Boulder. CU President Hank Brown has visited black church congregations promoting the school.
