The winner: Sam Terasaki, Denver
I served with these GIs. A number of them were inducted right out of camp. One name on the memorial is Robert Sueoka. He was inducted out of the Camp Amache, along with a number of other internees. Another name on the memorial is that of Kiyoshi Muranaga, who was in our regiment and later earned the Medal of Honor. He too was inducted out of Camp Amache. Fortunately, I was never sent to one of these relocation camps because I was born in Denver and have lived here all my life.
Family history: Nikki Raschbacher, Denver
Executive Order 9066 authorized the internment of American citizens of Japanese ancestry, and resident aliens from Japan. In truth, I’ve never been there physically. However, my mother was an internee at Heart Mountain in Wyoming. Like most Nisei who were in the internment camps, she would not or could not talk about it.
The Amache Preservation Society works to preserve the camp and its artifacts. We also travel the world telling the story of the Amache Relocation Camp and its detainees.
