Broncos cornerback Karl Paymah was released from a local hospital Friday morning after passing all of his tests following a concussion he suffered Thursday night in the Broncos’ preseason finale against the visiting Arizona Cardinals.

The third-year cornerback went to make a tackle in the second quarter and he collided with Arizona running back Steve Baylark. Paymah froze and fell back into the grass.

Safety Hamza Abdullah, who played with Paymah at Washington State, immediately waved for the training staff to assist Paymah.

Abdullah said the collision sounded like a “car crash.” Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said Paymah was “out cold.”

Bloom cut

Former Colorado standout receiver and return man Jeremy Bloom will be one of the Philadelphia Eagles’ final cuts, which will be announced Saturday.

Bloom’s father, Larry, confirmed that his son had been informed he will be released. Bloom, 25, was a fifth-round pick by the Eagles in 2006. He spent last season on injured reserve. Bloom played in the preseason but recently suffered a toe injury.

Bloom’s likely ticket to stay in the NFL will be as a returner. Bloom will be available to every other NFL team through a waiver claim Sunday. If Bloom is not claimed, he will become a free agent and available to sign anywhere starting Sunday. Because of a glut of available talent, many players who are cut this weekend will likely have to try out with other teams during the season.

Bloom, who is from Loveland, starred for the Buffs until he turned his focus to his Olympic skiing career after the 2003 football season. Bloom lost his NCAA eligibility in a highly publicized case because he made money as a skier.

Teams looking

It won’t be a surprise if teams that are looking for running backs, in particular Green Bay and Atlanta, call the Broncos before Saturday’s final cut. The Broncos have a surplus of running backs and teams often talk prior to the cutdown dates. There has been some speculation that Denver second-year running back Mike Bell could be on the bubble because he played fullback Thursday against Arizona and undrafted rookie Selvin Young has made a good impression at tailback. However, it would still be a surprise if Bell were let go. The team still looks at him as a key tailback.

Footnotes

Kenard Lang had a tryout with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday. The veteran defensive end was cut by Denver last Sunday. … Punter Paul Ernster, who was released by the Broncos on Tuesday, worked out for New England on Friday.
