A 65-year-old Chatfield State Park employee was killed this morning when he drove his car into a concrete wall near a picnic area, officials say.

The name of the employee has not been released pending notification of family members, said Trooper Gilbert Mares of the Colorado State Patrol.

CSP investigators were called to the scene about 7:30 a.m. after someone on a bicycle saw the wrecked car, Mares said.

The parks employee, who is not a ranger, was going south near the Fox Run picnic area about 6 a.m. when he went off the left side of the road apparently to make a turn, went down an embankment and hit the wall, he said.

The man was not wearing a seat belt. The accident is under investigation.
