Broncos cornerback Karl Paymah was released from a local hospital Friday morning after passing all of his tests following a concussion he suffered Thursday night during the team’s preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals.

In the second quarter, Paymah tried to make a tackle and his helmet collided with the knee of Arizona running back Steve Baylark.

Paymah, already on the ground, immediately froze and then fell back into the grass. Denver safety Hamza Abdullah, who played with Paymah at Washington State, frantically waved for the Broncos’ training staff to come to Paymah’s aid.

Abdullah said the collision sounded like a “car crash.” Coach Mike Shanahan said Paymah was “out cold” initially.

Meanwhile, left guard Ben Hamilton returned from Pittsburgh after seeing a concussion specialist last week. Hamilton declined to elaborate on the results of his visit or on his timetable to return. But he said there were positive developments.

Hamilton missed the entire preseason with the lingering effects of a concussion. He was replaced by Chris Myers, who will start at Buffalo next Sunday in the Broncos’ opener if Hamilton can’t play.

Warren makes Raiders

The Broncos moved a step closer to obtaining a fifth-round pick in the 2008 draft from Oakland.

Defensive tackle Gerard Warren, traded by the Broncos on Aug. 20, made Oakland’s 53-man roster. If Warren is on the Raiders’ roster for any game this season, or if he is traded by the Raiders, the Broncos will get the draft pick.

Footnotes

Punter Paul Ernster, who was cut Tuesday by the Broncos, worked out for New England on Friday. … Shanahan had his annual team party at his home Saturday night. … Kenard Lang had a tryout with New Orleans on Thursday. The veteran defensive end was cut by Denver last Sunday.
