Getting your player ready...

Excuse me, but isn’t the preseason supposed to be an afterthought? Isn’t the wild ride supposed to start once the regular season rolls around?

Not for the Broncos.

As usual, Mike Shanahan was his proactive self when it came to paring down the roster to 53 players. The flurry of moves can be described in a question: Who would have thought, when training camp opened, that Gerard Warren, Jimmy Kennedy and Ebenezer Ekuban wouldn’t be on the opening-day roster?

All three are gone, Warren in a trade, Kennedy to the waiver wire, and Ekuban to the surgeon’s table. In their place are Antwon Burton, Amon Gordon and some guy named Simeon Rice.

Oh, and did I mention Kyle Johnson? If you’re a regular reader of this space, you knew Johnson wasn’t a lock to make the team. You knew, when push came to shove, Cecil Sapp might end up the starting fullback.

Sure enough, it happened. It was a surprise, but not a shock when Johnson didn’t make the team. But then, this is Shanahan, the NFL’s premier risk taker-slash-wheeler dealer, we’re talking about.

Nothing should come as a shock when he’s making the decisions.
